I have been interested in putting in some type of garden for a few years now. I have grown herbs in pots when I lived in an apartment, but never an actual garden. Hannah has had gardens in the past, so I was excited to tackle this project together. We get our green thumbs from our dad who received MANY phone calls during this whole process.
We chose to start with 1 raised bed so that it would be easy to maintain, leaving plenty of room to add more beds later if we decide. I did some research with the help of my dad and decided on a prefabricated raised bed kit that easily slides together.
Supplies:
- 2 - 4x8 raised beds
- 19 bags of top soil
- 2 bags of peat moss
- Vegetables of choice (for our fall garden we chose leeks, red & white onions, collard greens, romaine lettuce, red leaf romaine lettuce, and broccoli)
Slide the boards into the end caps. You can decide to make two separate 4x4 beds or connect them like we did for a larger 4x8 bed.
Next, shovel out all the grass. This is the hardest part, but Hannah and I are always up for an extra workout.
We put 1 small bag of peat moss down in each 4x4 section first - this helps retain moisture.
Fill with the top soil and spread out evenly. You can see Katy, our 13 year old yellow lab was loving the project too. Follow the instructions on the plants for spacing and depth of planting.
Hopefully we can keep little critters away and enjoy some fresh vegetables in the next few months!! Start to finish the project only took 3-4 hours, including our second trip to Home Depot to get more top soil. It cost around $180 total.
