Although most summer songs are released in May, this week’s list of top releases isn’t the sunniest in nature. Still, they’re bound to add the right amount of heft to any party you’re planning. With a mix of 90s fuzz and character studies, these albums will incorporate some much needed solemnity and balance to your summer.

PS I Love You (@psiloveyouband) has been gaining traction in the noise rock world for quite a while, and their sophomore album clearly looks to continue that trend. Death Dreams boasts an extension of the Canadian duo’s tendency to propagate the darker side of shredding indie-rock, with early tracks like “Princess Towers” blending killer hooks with a darker sound.

If this decade has taught us one thing, it’s that nostalgia rock will never die. The fuzzy, Smashing Pumpkins twin Silversun Pickups (@sspu) are back to make us all remember that there was a time when we loved space rock and Billy Corgan. Nostalgia isn’t the only quality that carries Silversun Pickups, though — their infectious melodies and unique vocals make each album distinctive and worth a full listen.

Damon Albarn (@damonalbarn), the front man of seminal brit-pop band Blur and the genre-bending Gorillaz, is releasing the first in what will hopefully be a long line of solo recordings, and we couldn’t be more excited. Albarn always adds some weighty intellectualism to his records, and Dr. Dee is no different — the main character explores the nature of “Brutishness” throughout the soundtrack to this modern opera. The album is almost guaranteed to be unlike anything you have on your iPod, and if nothing else, will provide a singular listen.
