It’s rare for an artist’s first foray into the public eye be pulled off flawlessly, but Brooklyn’s own Pronoun has done a near-perfect job of introducing herself and her singular sound to the world. Reminiscent of The Japanese House and MUNA, Alyse Vellturo’s pop project packs an emotional punch. With a steady backbeat and crunchy guitars, “A Million Other Things” begs existential questions immediately upon its opening: “Is this how it ends / is this how it starts?” Where some initial singles might immediately drape themselves in synths and solos, Pronoun gives her song room to breathe, as it slowly unfolds into its final form. The looped arpeggios and atmospheric vocals are the perfect palette for the song’s reflective chorus. “Come back, baby, even if it hurts,” Pronoun sings against the unrelenting forward drive of the instrumentation. Pronoun fans know that this song’s been a long time coming, but the care and creativity its gestation required truly shows in the released version. For Pronoun, there are surely a million things she’ll be doing in the world after this song — but first off, her TNONAY EP drops in November.
