Press – SB County’s Top Volunteers, Nonprofits Recognized for Service

The Academy for Grassroots Organizations honored five individuals and nonprofits during its 2013 Nonprofits Awards Luncheon held Friday, Sept. 27, at the Spring Valley County Club in Victorville.

“These are our region’s superstars who make a very real impact on the lives of the residents of San Bernardino County,” said Vici Nagel, president and CEO of the Academy for Grassroots Organizations.

Those honored during the annual luncheon include the following:

– Chairman’s Award: Edison International – Over the past four years alone, they have provided $68 million in funding to positively affect the lives of people in the communities they serve. Tammy Tumbling, Director of Philanthropy for Southern California Edison accepted the award.

– Nonprofit Agency of the Year: Family Assistance Program – Providing families with the tools necessary to create and maintain healthy family dynamics, which guides clients to maintain permanent housing through intensive life skills education.

– Executive Director of the Year: Lisa Lawrence – High Desert Community Foundation, Building High Desert and Mountain communities by making it possible for a wide range of donors to create affiliate funds to meet critical community needs.

– Adult Volunteer of the Year: Doug Donahue – Apple Valley Christian Care Center, which provides professional quality services in a loving environment to medically fragile, disabled, elderly and hospice residents.

– Nonprofit Employee of the Year: Carrie Hendrickson – Reach Out Morongo Basin, which promotes and sustains the quality of life for organizations in the High Desert through education, collaboration and new program developments.

– Youth Volunteers of the Year: Luis Lopez – Apple Valley Christian Care Center, which provides professional quality services in a loving environment to medically fragile, disabled, elderly and hospice residents.

The Academy for Grassroots Organizations (AcademyGO) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in our region by supporting and strengthening the social service sector. Endeavoring to help them change lives, AcademyGo worked with more than 500 people from 300 organizations in 2012, providing training and resource development services. The Academy’s services are open to any organization or volunteer that wishes to participate and encourages collaboration among the various service provider sectors including: nonprofits, charities, schools, public agencies, clubs and ministries.
