Having made a perfect album for the dying breaths of summer, it was fitting that Porcelain Raft’s release party was held on the first truly cool night of the season. The show began with a set from School of Night, Darby Cicci ‘s (The Antlers) solo project. The pillow of gauzy synths paired with his airy voice (and extremely fly white shoes) set the mood perfectly for the rest of the show.
Rewards followed, and quickly moved towards a more light hearted mood. While their rhythmic guitar, drum machines and baritone lead singer immediately bring to mind The Cars, the addition of electronic elements push them into dancier and less derivative territory. By the end of their set, they had the crowd dancing and working up some serious enthusiasm for the free tee shirts being thrown off the stage by front man Aaron Pfenning.
The room filled with smoke for the headliner, setting the mood perfectly for the celestial sounds of Porcelain Raft. Mauro Remiddi and his band launched directly into the first track off the Permanent Single, “Think of the Ocean” with a fervor that was instantly captivating. While the record is mixed with the sonic layers weaving in and out, creating a soft, billowy feel, Remiddi doesn’t hold back at all live. The songs have a more jagged edge, making them more tangible and easier to grab onto where the record sometime floats away. The celebratory nature of the show (it was the album release party after all), coupled with Remiddi’s jovial stage presence, made for a fantastically entertaining set. Even with an encore of two songs, it was clear the crowd could have stuck around much, much longer.
