Poll Shows The Republican Base Is Unconnected To Reality
For the last couple of days I have been bringing you some results from a recent Public Policy Polling survey -- done between May 6th and 9th of a random national sample of 1,222 registered voters, with a margin of error of 3.2 points). But I saved what I believe to be the most troubling part of that survey for today -- a part that shows many Americans, especially Republicans, choose to ignore the truth and evidently live in their own fantasy world.
As anyone who even cursorily keeps up with the news knows, the stock market has rebounded under President Obama -- and currently has a higher value than ever before. Also, the unemployment rate in this country has dropped markedly under President Obama.
Unfortunately, a lot of people in this country have either been living in a cave cut off from civilization, or they choose to ignore the facts. About 17% of Democrats, 22% of Independents, and 32% of the general public believe the stock market has decreased in value under President Obama. And 28% of Democrats, 35% of Independents, and 43% of the general public believe the unemployment rate has gone up under President Obama.
The saving grace is that majorities of those groups all realize the truth -- that the stock market has risen and the unemployment rate has dropped. But it still bothers me that anyone could ignore such obvious truths.
Then we have the Republicans, who seem to be totally disconnected from reality. A majority of Republicans (57%) say the stock market has gone down, and an even larger majority of Republicans (64%) say the unemployment rate has risen. They seem to hate our president so much that facts are irrelevant to them. Either that, or they simply get all their news from Fox (the network that can't admit anything good has happened under the Obama administration).
Regardless of the reason for it, I find it very troubling that so many low-information voters (people actually registered to vote) will possibly be going to the polls in November.
