La Crosse, WI, police officer Casey Rossman and his K9 Brutus earned first place in the drug detector course Saturday during the U.S. Police Canine Association competition in Duluth, Minn.
The pair earned a perfect score of 200 on the course, which measures speed, accuracy and obedience, according to police. A total of 39 teams competed and had to search two rooms.
Rossman and Brutus were certified this fall for the Schutzhund VSK, an internationally recognized police K9 certification. They scored the highest of all teams during a Schutzhund trial at Bachbett Kennels in Mindoro.
Brutus was the fastest dog in suspect apprehension, running 50 yards in 3.3 seconds, according to police. Brutus and Rossman won a medal for the fastest K9 team after sprinting 300 yards in 46 seconds.
Brutus, a 5-year-old German shepherd, joined the department in December 2009 and takes commands in German. He is trained to find drugs, missing people and criminals.
