Hey everyone,
As you all know, im plus size, i tell you all enough and im sure you're sick of hearing it, so im going to stop telling you!
I've been doing a lot more fashion posts on the blog as you all know and more and more, im noticing a lack of something pretty damn important - Underwear. Plus size underwear to be exact.
If im quite honest, plus size underwear, is a load of pants, which is why the title of this blog is what it is. I walked into Primark, and while there were loads of lovely underwear for 'standard sizes', there was nothing for women above a certain size and cup size. Kelly Brook is reportedly a 34E, and yet in certain stores, this is classed as plus size. Anyone who says Kelly Brook is 'plus size' is out of their mind. In actual fact, the same works in the opposite way! Many women have a smaller cup size than the national average (which is between a 34B and 36D) and yet they are classes as 'flat chested'. Society has well and truly scuppered women. Unless we fit into retailers expectations, we're classes as 'top heavy' or 'flat chested' when in actual fact, each woman is different and shouldn't have to conform to shop sizes.
Using Kelly Brook as an example, she teamed up with New Look to release an underwear range for women with a larger cup size. Admirable as it is, she failed to include larger back sizes, smaller cup sizes and larger sized pants, yet if you're a UK size 6 - which has been deemed 'below' the national average, you're able to get pants to suit.
You all may be thinking i'm looking out for myself, and to an extent, I AM! While it's important for women of a size 6 to have pants to fit, i also think it's important for women size 26 and beyond should have these available. Many retailers will say there is not a demand for pants in a size 26 in comparison to a size 10, and yet will provide them in a size 6, despite the fact that in reality, there are less thin women in the UK, than there are curvy women!
Quite frankly, it angers me and im sure it angers some of you!
The number one rule in fashion is to choose the right underwear. How is that possible if you're plus size? For example, shapewear is in, it skims all those lumps and bumps, and removes any VPL. (visible pants lines!) and yet the women who need it the most - us curvy ladies - can't get it in mainstream stores. Instead, women who are a size 10, are able to make themselves look even more flawless! They are able to buy these in mainstream stores, yet if you're a size 28 and trying to keep your curves in check (Which BTW is the whole point of having shapewear!) you can't - not unless you go to a dedicated plus size store, or a specialised underwear designer online, which lets face it, sucks donkey ass, (irony! ass.. donkey!) and quite frankly, most of us don't have the budget to afford the prices some 'specialised' retailers are asking for.
Now, onto my next annoyance. TIGHTS! Women who have nice toned legs, invariably are happy to go bare legged. If you try to buy tights and you're a size 10, you can find different types, styles and affordable prices. If you're a size 20, invariably, you want to cover your legs a bit, and try to avoid your legs rubbing together (curby girl problems!) and yet, you walk into say River Island for example, and you certainly cannot get anything to fit. On the odd occasion where i have been able to find plus size tights and hosiery, i can only find one style, whereas the people who need it the least have loads of options and prices to suit every budget.
Enter the new 'pants are pants' campaign...
My aim is simple ladies;-
- To get in touch with retailers and find out why they dont stock plus size underwear, shapewear and hosiery.
- To find out which high street and online retailers do stock these
- To find out why 'standard' sizes are more affordable and widely available opposed to 'larger' sizes
- To find out if retailers have any plans to include these lines in the future, and if not, why not.
If you'd like to help me on my mission, then you can!!!
Go on an underwear mission! The next time you're in a store and you see underwear that is available for plus sizes, take a picture and tweet it to me @hollysbeautybox or send me an email at [email protected] and i will include these retailers in future posts on the blog, and will tweet them personally.
Alternatively, if you walk into a store and dont see what you're looking for, tweet me a picture, or a standard tweet or email, if you see what you're looking for, but cant get it unless you're willing to pay through the teeth for it, then get in touch!
Lets change the way retailers treat curvy ladies!
