Though the duo has released only a four song EP since their beginnings in 2011, Echo Park’s Angela Gail and Jeffrey Jacob, operating under the name In the Valley Below, have steadily built a reputation and draw with their pleasantly dark, enigmatic tunes — even landing a spot supporting Mates of State on their recent East Coast run. A blend of organic folk harmonies and well-placed electronics and guitars, the songs on their self-titled EP are often gentle but expansive, filling more emotional space than new sonic territories. The track that seems to epitomize this structure most, “Take Me Back”, is also my favorite on the EP. There’s something beautiful in its sparse instrumentals and almost spiritual chorus. The EP is available for pay-what-you-wish, so be sure to grab it above!
