Pitt : Panthers won their ACC opener against Boston College 30-20.
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. — Pitt proved that its season-opening win was no fluke Friday night as the Panthers won their ACC opener against Boston College 30-20.
Pitt (2-0, 1-0 ACC) was happy to keep the ball on the ground and sophomore running back James Conner led the way with 213 yards on 35 carries. It was Conner’s third consecutive 100-yard performance dating back to last year’s bowl game.
Pitt fell behind 7-3 early in the first quarter, and things looked bleak for the Panthers after an interception from quarterback Chad Voytik.
They bounced back after that, though, and dominated the rest of the half en route to a 20-7 lead at halftime. Boston College (1-1, 0-1 ACC) threatened to make it a game midway through the third quarter when a 48-yard touchdown strike from quarterback Tyler Murphy to Shakim Phillips that made it 27-14. The Panthers didn’t wilt, though, and responded with a field goal drive of their own to extend the lead to 30-14.
For the second consecutive week, redshirt sophomore Chad Voytik wasn’t asked to do much. He finished 10 of 20 for 111 yards and two touchdowns, both to sophomore receiver Tyler Boyd.
With the exception of a couple of big plays, Pitt’s defense did a good job containing Boston College dual-threat quarterback Tyler Murphy, who finished with xxx yards passing and xxx yards running.
He did have a 51-yard rush on the Eagles’ opening drive, but was largely contained after that.
Pitt returns to action next week with a Saturday game against Florida International.
