The Pirates officially released Tony Sanchez who they really have no room for or need for in the organization. The Pirates have more superior catching talents in the pipeline. Diaz isn't far from the MLB.
People may grumble about choosing Pedro Alvarez in hindsight but picking him in the draft was the right choice at the time and it sent a message to fans and MLB that the Pirates were no longer afraid to take the Best Player Available and one who was represented by Scott Boras.
Tony Sanchez drafted a year later, was perhaps the one 1st rounder during the Huntington regime that everyone can agree on, was a bad pick. At the time even the most loyal of us, those trying to find optimism couldn't really find it with this pick. It was a reach on a guy they figured they could develop. They used the money they'd have used to overpay above slot on a better player in the 1st and distributed it throughout the rest of the draft.
Tony Sanchez just didn't develop as they had planned
