Pirates Are Undefeated

By Kipper @pghsportsforum
A great start yesterday to Spring Training with a 3-2 victory over the TB Rays who were split squad. Those who I think we will see in Pittsburgh this Summer and their positives -
  • Jeff Locke, 3IP, 0H, 1K/1W, Pick off
  • Chris Leroux, IP, 2H, 2K
  • Bryan Morris, IP, 0H, 1W
  • Duke Welker, IP, 1K
  • Starling Marte 1-2, SB
  • Jerry Sands, 1-2

We also had a nice pitching performance from Bryan Brown, and some good hitting from Felix Pie, but I am doubtful they will be in the plans of the Pirates in 2013. Locke, IMO, should be in the Rotation, and Leroux & Morris should be in the Bullpen out of ST. Duke Welker is one of those upper 90's throwers who looks like a tight end at 6'7", 235. He has struggled with his control since being drafted in the second round, but last year at AAA he had a 2.27 ERA, averaged a K per IP, and a .214 average against. I think we will see him sometime in 2013, and much earlier if he can show command. Just the first game, but Josh Harrison and Anderson Hernandez at 2B? We started d'Arnaud at SS and for my money I would have started Dejesus at 2B - d' & DeJ are two guys we need to see, and I think we already know the capabilities of Harrison and Hernandez. DeJesus has been an excellent hitter all the way through the minors in the Dodger org and we need to see if he can transition that near .300 average through the minors to the majors. He has shown the ability to field at 2B and until he broke his leg in ST a few years ago, he was the SS of the future for the Dodgers - I think we may need a SS in the near future and I would not waste time.
