Maybe it is your first time going to Rome or maybe you’ve been there many times, in any event if you’re searching for a neighbourhood that’s not touristy, is off the beaten path and has “yet to be discovered”….than Pignetto is for you!
“Pignetto” refers to “quartiere” area of Rome that’s main street is the Via Del Pignetto between the Via Prenestina and the Via Casilina. It is different from the rest of Rome because it is filled with villas and houses as opposed to apartment buildings and takes its name from the characteristic pine trees that line its streets.
Rent is cheaper here than in other parts of Rome so you’ll find a lot of creative studios (like my friends studio!!), artists, interesting cafes and small boutiques.
Pignetto
Pignetto is also where my friends live, so I’ve stayed in this area more times than I can count. My recommendation to ANYONE visiting Rome without kids is to make their way to the Via Del Pignetto in the evening for a drink and aperitivo or even for dinner. T
he whole street becomes FILLED with artsy, urban, young locals laughing and having their beer and street food on the sidewalk, or eating dinner and smoking on the numerous outdoor patios.
Now that both my friends and I have kids we’re more inclined to walk to streets during the day and head over for brunch at the historic Necchi restuarant, where Paosolini filmed his first film!
THIS is the real Rome, it’s dirty but also beautiful, you’ll see families and drug dealers hanging out in the parks together, and the street that is a vegetable market in the day becomes a major party spot in the evening.
If you are on a budget and staying in Rome Pignetto is also a good option for cheap accomodations from hotels to bed and breakfasts, you can find a clean hotel or even apartment at around 50 euro a night! It is easy to get to the center of Rome with the tram or bus, or even walk!
If you want to be like a REAL Roman parent that means pushing your stroller over the train tracks quickly before the tram comes! If you’re not quite ready for that kind of adventure I recommend waiting for the tram or bus and navigating the complicated area of Porta Maggiore in a safe area like ON public transit!
