As mentioned in several of my earlier posts, India is a treasure trove of magnificent temples and ancient monuments. There are several such ‘hidden gems‘ in the form of beautiful, ornate temples dating back centuries in and around the bustling IT city of Bengaluru. Yet another addition to this wonderful list is the Ramalingeshwara group of temples in Avani. Just about 100 km from Bangalore, Avani is located in Kolar district and is easily accessible by road. A great idea for a day trip, the temple interestingly dates back to the 10th century and was constructed by the Nolamba dynasty.
Steeped in history, Avani is believed to be the home of sage Valmiki. It is also believed that Avani was visited by Lord Rama and was the birth place of His sons, Luva-Kusha. The complex itself has multiple temples and the main deity is Lord Shiva, in the form of a Linga. Legend has it that Rama and His brothers, established the Lingas here and hence the four main shrines are known as Ramalingeshwara, Lakshmanalingeshwara, Bharathalingeshwara & Shatrugnalingeshwara.
Fine architecture, elaborate pillars and unique carvings are some of striking features of the temple. Here are some captures:
Constructed in the Dravidian style, the temple has several unusual carvings on its outer walls.
The best part about the temple is the lush greeenery all around that makes the ambience all the more appealing.
