Finally, Phoenix gives a taste of their forthcoming LP, Bankrupt!, with the excellent synth-drenched new single, “Entertainment.” Bankrupt! follows the group’s breakout record, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, released in 2009.
With the world restless, the band, in typical Phoenix fashion, released a mysterious teaser on their website with the word Bankrupt! flashing across the screen, accompanied by an epileptic shock warning. Since then, the French foursome has announced the track-listing, artwork, and a string of tour dates, including Coachella.
While not as immediately gratifying as “Lisztomania” or “1901,” after about twelve listens I can assure you that “Entertainment” is a sign of good things to come. With some culturally ambiguous influences, the new direction of the single sounds like something resembling the newfound breadth and depth of IO Echo or Youth Lagoon. Look out for the new LP, Bankrupt!, via Glassnote on April 23rd and peep the track-listing below.
