Following up their 2010 album, Eyelid Movies, a couple of EPs, singles and various collaborations, Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter of psych-pop Phantogram fame (excuse the alliteration) have released a new single titled “Black Out Days”. Even though their new label reps at Universal have blocked the video clip uploaded by the band, you can still hear the sensational track via Soundcloud above.
The tune maintains the duo’s spontaneity and unique sound, combining urban beats, heavily reverb-effected vocals and layered industrial bass. As the track rises and falls in all the right places and technical guitar licks are added for extra detail, the track finishes with a sudden change of pace featuring a quiet piano outro accompanied by Barthel’s captivating vocals, “Black out days, I don’t recognize you anymore.” With such a dramatic change in the final sequence, the track resonates with a feeling of completeness and wholesomeness. “Black Out Days” is a truly well crafted song reflecting modern day songwriting trends and sounds.
