The Perth Royal Show, which originated in 1834, is an annual event that I have loved since I was a little girl. The atmosphere and aromas, showbags and sword swallowers, rides and ringside events, fauna and food, has enticed me back year after year and 2017 will see me swallowed up by the crowds yet again. The show, established by The Royal Agricultural Society of WA, provides a platform to showcase the state's finest foods. The Taste WA pavilion will present award winning local food which allows consumers to sample their wares direct. I was invited to a launch of the Perth Royal Food Awards where a grazing table exhibited a range of WA's finest produce.
Categories include: Perth Royal Dairy Awards and Perth Royal Condiment Awards, so crumbly cheeses and delicious dips were definite crowd pleasers.
Perth Royal Wine Awards is open to all of Australia so has been instrumental in pushing WA wines onto the national stage.
Two new categories were added this year, Perth Royal Sausage Awards and Perth Royal Chocolate Awards. Butcher, Vince Garreffa thinks the inclusion of a sausage section is excellent for small business and allows consumers to discover what's really in a good sausage! No more needs to be said about sampling chocolate.
The Perth Royal Bread and Pastry Awards I believe must be the most popular to judge as these donuts and cake disappeared fast and I heard no complaints.
An expertly made expresso martini completed the tasting for the evening.
The IGA Perth Royal Show opens on September 23rd and runs for eight days. Take a detour through the TASTE pavilion on your way to sideshow alley and indulge in eating the best local produce, and maybe take home a showbag of award winning food!
