Penn State : Nittany Lions' 'healthy' going into Week 2
Relentless weight training, Jesse James said, serves more of a purpose than to make him a likely future high NFL draft choice.
James, a tight end from South Allegheny, had a career-high seven catches during Penn State's season-opening win Saturday. Five receptions came in the first half, but just two after a crushing hit on James by Central Florida's Clayton Geathers.
James was seen on replays favoring his shoulder at times from that point on. When asked about it Tuesday, the 6-foot-7 James said, “I'm great. Feel better than ever.
“That was a big hit, but I'm 270 pounds for a reason. I can take those kind of hits.”
Coach James Franklin reiterated his policy of not providing any injury updates.
“We came out of the game really healthy,” Franklin said. “As you guys know, that's going to be my answer anyway.”
‘We-fense'
In what apparently will be a new weekly inner-program honor (at least publicly), Franklin announced quarterback Christian Hackenberg (offense), tackle Anthony Zettel (defense) and kicker Sam Ficken (special teams) as the “coaching staff players of the week.”
None of the choices was a surprise. In fact, perhaps they weren't even worth mentioning.
The way Franklin described the categories for the awards, though, is.
Hackenberg needed no explanation as the offense's game MVP. For Zettel, Franklin's honor came “defensively.”
For special teams, though, not missing a beat, Franklin said, “and on wefense it was Sam Ficken.”
Wefense?
“Yeah, we always call special teams, ‘wefense' because it's the one time where everybody is coming together,” Franklin explained. “You have got offense, and you have got defense, and then you're able to bring all 118 guys together on wefense. That's what we have always called it.”
Apparently not extensively around Ficken.
“Wefense?” Ficken said when asked. “That's news to me. I've heard ‘nektons' a lot, but wefense is new to me.”
Nektons — aquatic organisms that can actively swim against currents — are a favorite term of special teams coordinator Charles Huff to describe the mentality he wants the unit to share.
Almost ranked
The Lions' 49 points placed them in a tie for 29th in the country in the latest AP poll.
1994 team honored
The undefeated Big Ten and Rose Bowl champion 1994 Lions team will be honored at halftime Saturday.
