Penguins Begin 2016-17 Regular Season with a Three-Game Homestand at CONSOL Energy Center

"Pittsburgh Penguins fans will have plenty of opportunities to see the defending Stanley Cup champions at home early in the season, as the first three games of the 2016-17 regular season, and six of nine October contests, will be played at CONSOL Energy Center.
Pittsburgh’s three-game homestand to open its 50th anniversary begins with the previously-announced home opener against the Washington Capitals on Thursday, October 13 at 7 p.m., followed by games against the Anaheim Ducks (Oct. 15) and Colorado Avalanche (Oct. 17).

The Penguins and San Jose Sharks will play a rematch of the Stanley Cup Final, won by Pittsburgh in six games, on Thursday, October 20 at CONSOL Energy Center. Two weeks later, the clubs will meet again on November 5 at the SAP Center at San Jose.
A highlight for Penguins fans will come on Saturday, February 25 when the Penguins host the Philadelphia Flyers in an outdoor game at Heinz Field as part of the Coors Light NHL Stadium Series. This will be the fourth outdoor game the Penguins have participated in, and the second at Heinz Field (2011 NHL Winter Classic vs. Washington).
Hockey fans have a chance to witness the first-ever NHL regular-season meeting between the Penguins’ Sidney Crosby and the Edmonton Oilers’ Connor McDavid on Tuesday, November 8 at CONSOL Energy Center. McDavid missed both Penguins-Oilers meetings last season due to injury.
Four days after McDavid’s visit, the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town on Saturday, November 12. The Maple Leafs own the top pick in Friday’s NHL Draft, where they are expected to choose American Auston Matthews, who has already been named to the Team North America roster for the World Cup.
Pittsburgh’s first road game will come in its fourth game, on Tuesday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. against the Montreal Canadiens at the Bell Centre.
The Tampa Bay Lightning, whom the Penguins defeated in a closely-contested seven-game series in the Eastern Conference Final, make the first of two visits to Pittsburgh on Sunday, January 8 at 1 p.m.The New York Rangers, who have faced the Penguins in the playoffs each of the last three years, come to CONSOL Energy Center for the first time on Monday, November 21.
The Penguins will play 30 games against Metropolitan Division foes; 24 games against the Atlantic Division; and 28 games against teams from the Western Conference (2 games each).
This year, the two Metropolitan Division teams that the Penguins will play five times are the New Jersey Devils (3 at home; 2 on the road) and the New York Rangers (2 at home; 3 on the road). The Penguins will play the other five Metro teams four times each.
The Penguins face off against the Atlantic Division three times each. Below is a chart breaking down the Atlantic clubs that Pittsburgh plays once or twice at home:

Here are some other notable schedule highlights:
*This year all teams will have a ‘Bye Week’ for the first time. The Penguins will hold theirs Jan. 1-7.
*There will be 15 sets of back-to-back games beginning Oct. 17-18 when the Penguins host Colorado then head to Montreal the next night.
*The longest homestand of the season is three games, which the Penguins will do on six occasions.
*This year’s longest road swing is five games from March 8-15, a trip that will take the Penguins to Winnipeg, Edmonton, Vancouver, Calgary and Philadelphia. Pittsburgh will also embark on a four-game road swing between Oct. 29-Nov. 5 through Philadelphia, Anaheim, Los Angeles and San Jose.
*The regular season will conclude with a three-game road trip that begins in New Jersey and concludes with back-to-back games at Toronto and the New York Rangers.
