Oskar Kalmaru is the CMO and Co-founder of Narrative, a company that wants to help you remember and capture special moments by using what they call a “Narrative Clip“, a tiny automatic camera and app that gives you a searchable and shareable photographic memory.
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your company – what is Narrative all about?
Narrative helps people preserve and organize their memories so they can easily remember and share their own story. The simple, the mundane, the hilarious, the sad, the laughs – all moments matter. Narrative empowers you to live a life that matters, where you can capture, relive and share the moments that matter – because you matter. Narrative is committed to offering extraordinary products and services for anyone who wants to capture more of the magic of the moment. Narrative is an experience that will enhance the recall of that special event and let you spend more time in the moment. Narrative lets you tell a unique story from your life; candidly and effortlessly.
Q: Please tell us a little bit about your background and how you started your company?
As a co-founder of Narrative, I have been a part of recruiting the team, setting up office in Stockholm, and most recently San Francisco, and designing the first iteration of prototypes and products. The life of a startup co-founder also includes creating processes for management, engaging in business development across the company and water the plants. As the marketing officer, I am leading Narrative’s efforts in building a world leading consumer brand. I manage a team of communication and marketing experts and I am the contact person for our external communications agencies. I have long term start-up and general management experience with marketing responsibilities, and deep expertise in entrepreneurship, business development, strategic communications, PR and marketing.
Q: What are some of the projects you are working on right now?
We just opened an office in San Francisco so I am busy setting up the office and hiring additional Narrative team members. It’s an exciting time! Currently, we’re working on several different projects, including preparing for CES and SXSW and sponsoring the San Francisco Holiday Ice Rink.
Q: What are your plans for the future, how do you plan to grow this company?
We’re looking forward to growing our San Francisco office and efforts in the U.S. while working very closely with our team in Sweden. As a company, we’re always looking at ways to develop and expand. We started shipping out the Narrative Clip December 2013, and it’s been a successful year so far. As 2015 approaches, the team is busy improving our product from our users’ feedback.
Q: How do you bring ideas to life?
We have great team members that bring our ideas to life. We work hard together to come up with the best ideas, develop them, and then roll them out. We’re expanding our retail presence, while also making it easy for customers to purchase the Narrative Clip through our website.
Q: What were some of the mistakes you made launching your company, and if you had to start over, what would you do differently?
If I were to go back and do something differently in the starting phase of Narrative it would be to start evaluating all marketing activities earlier and more quantified. It’s really hard to do when you don’t know what you’re marketing or to whom, but the best way to find that out is to test and learn. You can’t do that too much.Q: What’s one book you recommend every entrepreneur to read?
I think everyone should read The Black Swan by Nassim Nicholas Taleb. It is bound to change your perspective of management of risk and opportunities.Q: How can our community get in touch with you?
