The Optus New Turbo Cap Plus plan has been the bread and butter prepaid offer from Optus for a few years now. Yes they have $2 Days and Connect For Less but both of these are rather specialist prepaid plans. $2 Days offers unlimited everything for $2 a day however that sort of spend doesn’t suit everyone and if you hardly use your phone it can be an expensive way to go prepaid. Connect for Less is focused on international calls. It is also a specialist sim so you can’t swap out of it and keep your existing phone number.
New Turbo Cap Plus was the generalist plan, lots of calls, cheap TXT and loads of data plus unlimited social media access. Up until about a year ago it actually held even better value, then they added the word New at the front and made the unlimited offers only for the higher recharges eg over $40.
Never the less it was quite a competitive offer. Recently Optus have launched Prepaid Social. Comes with calls credit, minutes to anyone, unlimited activity to other Optus users, data and unlimited social media access. Looks good and when you compare the $30 recharge value, you are on par. Move beyond this and the New Turbo Cap Plus plan was way ahead. Maybe too far ahead given the revenue pressures some Telcos might be facing.
Whilst we might be complaining about Vodafone reducing value with a drop in expiry for the Flexi Caps from 30 to 28 days and Telstra reducing data allowances on their Encore plans, at least they still exist.
I am sure we haven’t seen the last of the Turbo Cap, it might be on vacation for a while but I would expect it to return at some stage in the next 12 months. Prepaid Social just isn’t as competitive I am afraid.
