Open Garden DaysThe gorgeous canal belt that is so iconic of Amsterdam is the main attraction along the city's waterways. Imposing and majestic in their 17 century design, they command your attention. But what lies behind this gilded facade can literally take your breath away.

Indeed, countless courtyards and secret gardens are scattered throughout Amsterdam. Housed behind the protective walls of canal homes, these green spaces are kept private and rarely revealed to anyone not lucky enough to live in the homes that enclose them. That's why Amsterdam's Open Garden Days event is such a brilliant addition to the summer festival line-up. From 15 to 17 June, locals and visitors to Amsterdam are given a free pass inside these quiet corners.

The weekend event takes you through the much beloved museums housed on the canal, to their sweeping backyard stretches. Most treat visitors to Dutch hapjes (snacks) and drinks to enjoy as they take in the sights and smells. But more intimate are the garden patches found amongst the private homes of Amsterdam's locals. Usually, guests pass through a home's kitchen or sitting room and into their botanical back yard. It is here that Open Garden Days makes its biggest impression, offering visitors a rare glimpse into both the private lives of Amsterdammers as well as a hint of how the famed canal homes are designed inside.

What's more, Open Garden Days dedicates all its proceeds to a humanitarian cause. This year sees Dutch canal garden fund, Grachtentuinfonds in the spotlight. In the past, other charities like the Red Cross have been the gracious recipients. No matter the cause, Open Garden Days promises a chance to enjoy the secret gardens of Amsterdam while giving a helping hand to the city's  community.
