One Other Thought About Stand Your Ground

By Urbanbushwoman @urbanbushwoman9

I went to bed thinking about how this law is applied and how some people can get away with killing someone while others must serve prison terms. If you don’t follow me, just read about Marissa Alexander, a 31 year-old Tampa Bay mother who was being beaten by her abusive husband in 2010. She fired a warning shot at him to scare him off and tried to use SYG as her defense. Makes sense to me. He was pursuing her in their home to do her bodily harm and she needed to protect herself. He is still alive, well, and unharmed from the incident and she is now serving 20 years. For a damn warning shot.

What’s even more disturbing is how race plays a factor in Stand your Ground. Did you know that the Tampa Bay Times did a study of 200 SYG cases and found that defendants who killed Black people got off 73 percent of the time. I’m not surprised by this but it deepens my belief that George Zimmerman is going to be a free man very soon.
Ok. I’m done. I think too much when I really need to drink more. Pray for me y’all.
