Jarvis Jones was up, Landry Jones was down in the Steelers' 10-0 preseason loss to the Carolina Panthers.
Jarvis Jones proved to his doubters that he could play at this level, but the other second-year Jones, quarterback Landry Jones, did not.
Landry Jones had another lackluster performance last night in the Steelers' 10-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers at Heinz Field in the final preseason game.
The Steelers finished the preseason with a 1-3 record.
The starter in place of Ben Roethlisberger, Jones came up empty in his two-and-a-half quarters, and while playing with first and second-teamers in the first half could not convert any of his five third-down plays.
Jones did convert a pair of third downs in the third quarter and finished 14 for 18 but for only 97 yards.
"It's not as far off as it sounds," Mike Tomlin said at halftime. "We are moving the ball, just not consistently enough to produce points or sustain drives. But it's close."
Jones was sacked three times in the first half, with the second sack coming within a foot of a safety.
Rookie center Wesley Johnson whiffed twice to cause two of the sacks, while Jones fumbled on the third sack to effectively end his best drive. Johnson recovered the fumble, but on third-and-18 Jones completed a four-yard pass with 23 seconds left in the half.
On the other side of the ball, Jarvis Jones flashed quickness, power and a nose for the ball as he helped the Steelers restore some pride in their first-team defense.
Jones, Steve McLendon and Brett Keisel -- all criticized this past week as non-answers to serious problems -- each performed well as the Steelers' "Okie" defense played most of the first half against the Panthers' fullback or two-tight end offense.
The Panthers drove 63 yards to kick a 33-yard field goal on their opening drive, but were helped by a questionable spot on fourth-and-1 in which McLendon had caved the interior.
Jones remained on the field as the Steelers began sprinkling in second-teamers at the start of the second quarter, and he recovered a fumble of a high shotgun snap, and was also awarded a bonus 15-yard penalty for a horse-collar tackle by Fernando Velasco. But with the ball at the Carolina 46, the Steelers couldn't get a first down as Landry Jones threw a 6-yard pass on third-and-12.
Undrafted rookie Brendon Kay fared no better as the only other Steelers' quarterback. He completed five of 10 passes for 32 yards.
Darrius Heyward-Bey, who started at wide receiver, caught six passes for 44 yards to pace the Steelers' anemic offense.
Defensively, the Steelers rebounded from the fiasco last week in Philadelphia. The first-teamers allowed only a field goal, but were only asked to play six snaps in a sub-package, their scourge throughout this preseason.
In those six snaps, the Panthers converted three first downs, dropped a touchdown pass, threw incomplete, and in their only run attempt lost two yards.
The Panthers scored a touchdown with 6:29 left in the third quarter on a two-yard run by Fozzy Whitaker.
The Steelers lost rookie wide receiver Martavis Bryant (AC joint right shoulder), free safety Mike Mitchell (leg), and reserve cornerback Brice McCain (groin) to injuries during the game. Tomlin only had information on Mitchell and said he was fine.
