From Zap2it (contains spoilers if you haven’t watched episode 1×07):

Can you believe what happened on “Once Upon a Time” going into hiatus? We knew it was coming and we could hardly still believe it. But Zap2it has the dish from the “OUAT” executive producers Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.

Warning: Spoilers if you haven’t watched the Sunday, Dec. 11 episode yet.

Tell us about killing off Sheriff Graham.

“When Emma comes to town, Henry says you’re the prophecy, you’re the savior. You’re going to come and the final battle will begin. Well, if a battle is going to begin, there has to be stakes and unfortunately, sometimes stakes are people’s lives.”

So you aren’t afraid to kill off main characters?

“We aren’t. It’s not about doing it purely for shock value. What it’s about is we want the stakes to be real.

What we want to do is obviously we want the show to be as dramatic and exciting as we can make it, but we also feel seven hours into the show, we want the audience to know that what’s at stake is big. It’s life and death. You need to feel like the world of Fairytale Land and the world of Storybrooke both have their own dangers and these dangers are real.”

You’ve certainly left us with quite a cliffhanger going into the break. What can we look forward to when the show returns?

“We’re excited about exploring characters. I’m very excited for people to see Rumpelstiltskin’s origin story. That’s what we’ll be coming back with after the break.

These stories don’t exist in a vacuum. They can mash-up with each other … we’re very excited to show you what you didn’t know about Hansel and Gretel and what you didn’t know about Belle and ‘Beauty and the Beast.’”

Since the show obviously isn’t strictly adhering to one scribe or set of tales, is there any chance we’d see some Lewis Carroll popping up?

“Am I crazy or was there a hookah smoking caterpillar in the pilot? It was in the book. I believe there’s an ‘Alice in Wonderland’ photo in the book if you hit pause. When the book falls when Emma crashes the car and the pages flip by.

We’re sneaky like that, we’ll put it in even before you have a chance to ask the question.

Now whether or not we get to it this season is another question. But I can tease for you there is a bar in town called The Rabbit Hole. We’ll be seeing that in episode 12, our Valentine’s episode.”
