Oculus – A Fest of Many Firsts

Posted on the 27 December 2018 by Ssankarr

When Oculus finally arrives on the evening of 18th January 2019, it'll already have achieved things that put it in a stratosphere of its own. Never before has a collegiate festival been able to be so many things as Oculus has been and seems to have become, and yet shine in its true essence of being S.P.I.T's Techno-Cultural Festival. Showcasing the best of both worlds harmoniously fused together to offer students platforms and opportunities to reveal their tech skills and their creative ones, Oculus truly sees all.

There are several things that set Oculus apart from other fests in its space. One of the most important initiatives that Oculus has taken on board is to be a socially responsible festival. Indeed, through its tie-up with Ratna Nidhi Charitable Trust, Oculus has already performed Donation Drives that saw participation by over 200 students and faculty which helped them raise 2000+ garments and 250+ spectacles. Additionally, a percentage from all the registration fees will be contributed towards buying prosthetic limbs for disabled people who have been victims of terrible accidents in their lives.

Oculus is also proud to have tied up with Liminal VR Studios to become the first AR/VR powered college festival. Liminal will be present throughout Oculus through their very own Liminal VR Gaming. Moreover, Liminal will also be producing an AR site map for S.P.I.T, something never done before! S.P.I.T is also proud to announce that for the first time ever, Oculus is ecstatic to host its own edition of Human Library, an event meant to encourage dialogue and discourse in an attempt to shatter stereotype, begin conversations and generate empathy.

All these initiatives are feathers in the cap of this debutant fest. But for a second, even if we ignore these and look at Oculus through the eyes of a purely Techno-Cultural festival, there's still a lot to shout about. Through its pre-events, Oculus has already generated much footfall and fanfare. Nearly 500 students from all over the city participated in the TechRace, the first Pre-Event for Oculus 2019. A similar number witnessed the kick-off for the Fresher's party organized by Oculus, that saw Oculus Core Committee do a flash-mob for the fresher's.

So what can you expect from Oculus on the 18th,19th, and 20th of January? More of the same. For students that wish to blaze through the tech world, Oculus has the best tech events around. From tech-talks and start-up conventions to blockchain based hackathons and robotics events, oculus has you covered. Cultural events that get teams from all over Mumbai excited like the famous Carnival (fashion show) and the much anticipated Aelaan-E-Jung dance competition will be showcased. Not to mention, Oculus will finally end with it's own TEDx event, expected to enthrall the audience with renowned and interesting speakers.

Thus, an event that has been seven months in the pipeline, with a team of over 35 students, expecting a footfall of over 8000 from all over Mumbai will finally arrive on the 18 th of January 2018. We're ready, are you?
