Consequence of Sound: In the late ’90s, 2 Live Crew member and former mayoral candidate Luther Campbell teamed with the producers of Girls Gone Wild for his own series of adult films, which he dubbed Luke’s FreakShow. The films featured appearances from a cavalcade of celebrities, everyone from NFL linebacker Ray Lewis to NBA player Vince Carter to comedian Cendric the Entertainer. Guess who else was featured? Hip-hop mogul Jay Z (Obama supporter).
Back in 1997, a 28-year-old Shawn Carter appeared on an installment of FreakShow. I guess it was technically considered an interview, as Campbell asked Jay about his music and what he was working on. But given that two women were engaged in intimate acts mere centimeters from his body, Jay mostly just stumbled through his words. Campbell, meanwhile, sipped Hennessy straight from the bottle.
It’s honestly one of the strangest things you’ll ever see and will probably lead to Jay sleeping on the couch if Beyoncé ever gets wind of it. It also says a lot about how far we’ve come in just 15 years: many argue that hip-hop is still hypersexualized, but if a rapper like Kendrick Lamar or ASAP Rocky appeared in something like this today, the blowback would be intense and their career probably derailed.
