PITTSBURGH -- Chris Hubbard hasn't played tackle in a competitive game in two years and 11 months — since his last college game at the University of Alabama-Birmingham.
But the third-year Pittsburgh Steelers utility lineman practiced at right tackle on Wednesday, he said.
With Kelvin Beachum's season ended by an ACL injury on Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals, the tackle position is just one more way for Hubbard to get on the field when the Steelers visit the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday at 1 p.m. Alejandro Villanueva filled in for Beachum against the Cardinals and is set to do the same on Sunday.
He had been the team's swing tackle on the bench this season as Pittsburgh largely dressed its starting five linemen – Beachum, Ramon Foster, Cody Wallace, David DeCastro and Marcus Gilbert – with Villanueva and center/guard Doug Legursky on the sideline.
Pittsburgh signed fifth-year tackle Byron Stingily upon placing Beachum on the injured-reserve list Monday. Stingily played the first three years of his career with Steelers offensive line coach Mike Munchak as his head coach with the Tennessee Titans, though Mike Tomlin said that was irrelevant in signing the tackle.
Hubbard made just one game day roster this year, playing as a blocking tight end against the Baltimore Ravens on Oct. 1. It was his second career appearance after making his debut against the Carolina Panthers on Sept. 21, 2014.
The former undrafted free agent is primarily a guard for the Steelers and is listed as the backup center behind Cody Wallace. In college, he moved inside from tackle to play guard when someone got injured.
Pittsburgh Steelers QBs Practice Oct. 21 Pittsburgh Steelers quarterbacks Ben Roethlisberger, Landry Jones and Tyler Murphy go through drills at Steelers practice Wednesday. Michael Vick also throws the ball.
Hubbard has practiced at tackle for Pittsburgh before, but just on the scout team last year.
"You got to know it all," Hubbard said.
Though he doesn't expect to be adding more positions.
Said Hubbard, jokingly: "I can't throw the ball." Honest to God, I just wish Tomlin would STFU. His press conferences are more boring than watching grass grow. Are we to actually believe that Munchak having coached him for 3 yrs in Tennessee had nothing to do with his signing? I wouldn't bet a single penny on that.
