Nothing Is Cool is a mockumentary, the story about the rise and fall of indie hipster band The Moustache Bravado. In little over half an hour band members get kicked out, the multi-instrumentalist about talks the thrill of playing used books, toy piano's and vegetables, the shy lead singer turns out to a real bitch backstage (loosing her Far East accent in the process) and the drummer does a lot of coke in while sitting in a bathtub. The guitarist is the best musician and he has a crush on the multi-instrumentalist. They have a side-project going, called the Dead Ringers, which shows a lot of promise, but those recordings never see the light of day.
Tied together by the ramblings of supposedly Eastern Europe journalist trying to pin down the secret of indie music, Nothing Is Cool, is seriously funny. After he band break ups right after their CD release party, the journalist screams at the drummer and the guitar player, calling them spoilt Americans, who don't seem to realize how lucky they are. He wasn't even allowed to listen to rock 'n' roll when the Iron Curtain was still up.
Director Chris Punsalan has been a member of various indie bands, in fact he is one now, so there might be some autobiographical content in Nothing Is Cool. With a couple of real indie bands on the soundtrack, including his own band wish Boat, truth and fiction alternate within the blink of an eye. It's a story that didn't happen, but it is damn close enough to real life.
