DIY cabaret folk with layered vocals and chorus wailing away after sampling the whiskey. All this and more can be found on Processional, the new album by Brooklyn quartet Not Waving But Drowning. Band members Pinky Weitzman, Mason Brown, John Frazier and Matthew Talmage dozens of instruments and a couple household objects such as egg beaters, spoons and a garbage can.
Processional is like an overstuffed musical cupboard. Open the door and you get swamped by a stream of songs clamoring for attention. There's a bit of indie pop (Thanks a Lot, Lancelot), NOLA late Forties jazz (Windowsill) and a rumbling Tom Waits inspired slow march (Tiger Hunting). Best served in small portions initially to fully appreciate the inventive musicianship and smart word play.
Processional is a self-released album. Buy it from the band's website.
