Nope, Too Easy

By Stacylrust

When it comes to making money, most of us say we want it to be easy.

But, I’m starting to realize that’s not exactly true.

Easy is fine in theory… but, in practice, it seems that we actually prefer it to be difficult.

Because, easy is frightening.

It’s unfamiliar.

It’s uncomfortable.

It’s most likely too good to be true.

Can making money really be easy?

Is that okay?

What will people think?

It can’t possibly be easy to start a business and make great money straight out of the gate…

Nope, it’s probably some scam…

I’ve noticed something about the business world. About finance, investing, and making money… People take it seriously.

Putting together a business plan, finding funds, putting up your first website… it’s overwhelming and intimidating and above all, serious.

It’s important stuff.

Not to be taken lightly.

Marketing? It’s serious…

The perfect logo? Could take months to get the right one…

Picking the right vendor? Vital…

The right card stock for your business cards? Essential…

The perfectly tailored power suit? (in the perfect shade of navy… expensive, but not too showy)

The right pair of heels? (not too high… not too strappy… sensible, professional, and stylish)

The perfect elevator pitch? It’s life or death…

Make it or break it.

Take one misstep, and it will all come crashing down.

You have to do it right… because this is serious stuff.

It’s money, after all.

Money makes the world go round.

Money puts food on the table.

And, you better not mess that up.

But, the mental energy we put into business… into our careers… into our income… it’s astonishing.

Stop and ask yourself the question…. What if it were easy?

What if it were fun?

What if all that run around is really just overcompensation?

A way to make ourselves feel important?

Might sound strange coming from a business and marketing consultant… but if every decision you make is important, vital, and serious… your business might actually suffer.

It might stamp out the joy that brought your customers through the door in the first place.

Lighten up a bit.

Let it be easy.

Let it be fun.

It’s just business.

If you screw up, you can just fix the problem, no big deal.

It’s just money.

And, there’s always more where that came from.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing it’s really hard.

Because it might lead you to make stuffy, formal, serious decisions that alienate your customers.

It can be easy.

Money doesn’t have to be a mystery.

And, you can do it.
