NYC resident Noam Weinstein deals with grief and joy on his new album On Waves. He lost his mother and became a father, two life changing events that loom large in the lyrics of an orchestral pop album. The well placed use of brass and strings touches base with Elton John and Billy Joel in their Seventies peak. Weinstein has a way with words, changing roles (and sides) to make each song a short story. He can be a black bishop or a green beret (Last Reincarnation), a heartbroken son (Mother) and of course be confused about his significant other (Intelligent Design). Whatever guise he is wearing, he is always leading his musicians with a firm hand.

Safe for the backing vocals being a bit much at times Weinstein got himself an album's worth of superb snapshots of a turbulent phase in his life. When the dust has settled it will take him so time figure where to go next. He is an ardent observer, so new stories will show themselves as possible targets for another chapter in the next episode of his private Great American Songbook. Recommended if you like Spottiswoode & His Enemies and Ben Folds.
