No Winners for the $922 Million Powerball Jackpot, Now Up to $1 Billion!

Posted on the 18 July 2023 by Makably

An elusive victory eluded Powerball enthusiasts as lottery officials confirmed the absence of any winning tickets for Monday night’s staggering $922 million jackpot. Consequently, anticipation now builds for Wednesday night’s draw, which is projected to feature a jaw-dropping estimated grand prize of $1 billion. The drawn numbers from Tuesday night’s proceedings were 5, 8, 9, 17, 41, and the Powerball, 21.

At present, the cash value of the forthcoming jackpot on Wednesday night hovers around $516.8 million. Nevertheless, it’s important to note that if ticket sales surge in the lead-up to the draw, the actual prize may surpass the monumental $1 billion threshold.

This surge in the jackpot follows the disappointment of Saturday night’s draw, when no lucky participant emerged victorious, causing the prize to skyrocket to an estimated $900 million. The excitement intensified on Monday as ticket sales surged, capturing the attention of a greater number of hopeful players yearning to claim the colossal jackpot.

If the projected amount holds, Wednesday night’s jackpot will secure its place as the third-largest in Powerball’s storied history and the seventh-highest in the annals of U.S. lotteries. Only the record-breaking $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won last year and the monumental $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot claimed in 2016 surpass the magnitude of this upcoming prize.

Given the formidable odds of winning, with chances standing at a mere 1 in 292,201,338, the Powerball jackpot has gone unclaimed for 38 consecutive draws since April. Despite the lack of jackpot winners on Monday night, over 2.8 million tickets were fortunate enough to secure winnings, as buyers collectively amassed smaller cash prizes worth a staggering $41.7 million, as confirmed by Powerball officials.

Had an individual clinched the Monday night jackpot, they would have faced a pivotal decision between an annual payout of $922 million or a substantially reduced lump sum cash payment. Both figures were calculated before tax obligations.

Debbie Kempf, store director at Cosentino’s Price Chopper in St. Joseph, Missouri, shed light on the escalating frenzy surrounding the growing jackpot. As the excitement mounts, Kempf witnessed a surge in sales at her store, with individuals who typically abstain from purchasing tickets suddenly entertaining the idea of their own fortune. In addition, regular customers who consistently participate in the lottery decided to seize additional opportunities by purchasing a few extra tickets, driven by the mounting jackpot.

Kempf observed the emergence of group purchases, where friends, family, or coworkers pool their money to acquire a more substantial quantity of tickets, heightening their chances of winning. “More opportunity,” she remarked succinctly.

For eager participants, it’s crucial to remember that the winning Powerball numbers are drawn every Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday at 10:59 p.m. ET. Each Powerball ticket carries a price tag of $2 and is available for purchase in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Meanwhile, the Mega Millions lottery continues its steady ascent, with the estimated jackpot soaring to a remarkable $640 million as of Monday night. Mega Millions drawings occur on Tuesdays and Fridays, providing yet another avenue for hopeful individuals to chase their dreams of striking it rich.
