No Spg to Modi, Z-plus to Jindal

Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde has ruled out providing SPG security to Narendra Modi.
Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has increased the security of Congress MP and industrialist Naveen Jindal to 'Z' category.

TIMELINE

The security of Naveen Jindal, who represents the Kurukshetra Lok Sabha seat, has been increased to 'Z'category in view of naxal threat.
According to reports, a squad of 25 commandos drawn from Delhi Police and CRPF will now guard Jindal.

The specialised commando force is mandated to provide proximate security to the Prime Minister and former PMs and members of their immediate families.

After serial blasts in Patna during Narendra Modi's Hunkar rallly, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy had demanded SPG protection for the party's Prime Ministerial candidate. When mediapersons asked whether the Centre was considering providing the SPG security to the Gujarat CM, the Home Minister said:
"Narendra Modi has been given sufficient security. He does not need the SPG security." - Sushil Kumar Shinde, Home Minister
Narendra Modi has been accorded 'Z-plus' security with 24x7 protection by elite NSG commandos.

BOTTOMLINE

As per the SPG Act, the specialised commando force is mandated to provide proximate security to the Prime Minister and former PMs and members of their immediate families.
While demanding SPG security to Modi, Swamy also urged Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for amendment in the SPG Act. Swamy sought SPG security cover to "principal candidates for the post of Prime Minister in the fortchcoming elections in 2014."
