Night Beds (@nightbeds) have certainly been gaining momentum recently, and, following their appearance on NPR, Pianos was packed by the time the band took the stage. With beginnings reminiscent of Bon Iver’s production of For Emma, Forever Ago, Night Beds used a backwoods, rustic Tennessee cabin as their recording studio — a method that makes perfect sense given their style of music. Frontman and lyricist Winston Yellen crooned with his soft, often haunting, vocals that echoed emotions of longing and forgotten landscapes. The rest of the band was subtle yet crucial, providing a sweeping narration to accompany Yellen’s words.
Unfortunately, though, the crowd must have been looking for something a little more upbeat at the late night show, as talking during the set was so loud and distracting that towards the end, Yellen jumped off stage and asked people to quiet down — an unexpected move for a band with such a soft and mellow tone, but from where I was standing, after pouring themselves into a quiet, beautiful set, I say, good for him.
