So Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics rebooted the Tomb Raider games a while back. That happened. I have yet to play the game and I’d hate to be reductive, but I heard that it’s basically like a female version of Uncharted with more bows and arrows. I don’t have any fond memories of this franchise (considering I never played them), but there’s no doubt that it spawned what is arguably the most iconic female lead in gaming history. The reboot tells the story of how Lara became a hardened adventurer and she’s adapted an image that would resonate more with today’s youth.
So the laws of natural progression dictates that a reboot movie is to follow, right? Naturally.
Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics spoke with Variety about this project recently. This is what he said:
They [GK Films] are working from this new take that we’ve given them. It’s a good partnership. We’re seeing the challenges through the same lens. It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise. We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider’ film.
I’m assuming Angelina Jolie won’t be returning since it’s not a continuation of the older films and will follow a younger version of our fabled protagonist. I don’t know who they have in mind to play this new Lara Croft, but I hope they don’t go after Jennifer Lawrence for the role. If they do, I fear that we’ll face an over-saturation of J-Law, and besides, she’s already taken up archery in another movie franchise.
As far as this movie goes though, I just hope that it has more tomb raiding than weird extraterrestrial allegory for human greed. I’d love a more gritty Indiana Jones type film that focuses on her early years as a rookie adventurer that ISN’T ruined by some supernatural element.
