Ford is developing a new technology for cars that recognizes passing speed limit signs on the road and automatically slows down the vehicle when going over the speed limit.
The technology, dubbed Intelligent Speed Limiter, which can be activated via the steering wheel, uses a video camera mounted on the windscreen to scan road signs and sensors on the wheels to detect the speed of the vehicle to limit the amount of fuel delivering to the engine to slow down the vehicle.
“Drivers are not always conscious of speeding… sometimes only becoming aware they were going too fast when they receive a fine in the mail or are pulled over by law enforcement,” said Stefan Kappes, a safety supervisor at Ford.
As always, the drivers has the ability to override this feature when necessary by flooring the accelerator pedal. Ford believe this technology can help drivers avoid speeding tickets and accidents as it helps drivers to stay within the speed limit. The company says it will also help with the development of driverless cars.
