New Bluetooth Smart Padlocks from Master Lock Turn Your Smartphone into a Key

New Bluetooth Smart Padlocks from Master Lock Turn Your Smartphone into a KeyMy sons are Boy Scouts, and they enjoy going on camping trips with their troop. One year, they went with some leaders to a campground that was about an hour’s drive away and discovered that some important items had been left in the Scouts’ storage shed back home. Fortunately, there were a few other people coming to the camp later in the day, so they were called to retrieve the items from the shed and bring them up. However, there was one big problem: The only person with the key was already at the campsite. Nobody else had a key. The only options were to try to break into the shed or have someone make the hour’s drive back to bring the key, which is what they did.

This cool technology turns your smartphone into a key for the lock. People who need access to the lock can upload the Master Lock Vault eLocks app on their phone, which gives them the ability to open the padlock using Bluetooth technology by holding their phone near the lock. Or, if you have an emergency situation like we did in the example above, you can invite someone as a “guest” through your phone and they can then open the lock with your permission.

I registered for the free Master Lock Vault program, which took just a minute. Then I uploaded the Master Lock Vault eLocks app to my phone (available from the Apple or Android store) and synced it to the lock. When I held my phone close to the lock, it opened! It was also easy to offer access to another person. I could search for the person in my contact list or manually enter someone. I chose my husband from my contact list and entered his last name and email. He was then sent an “invitation” through email to register at masterlockvault.com, get the app, and have the ability to open the lock. I could also choose to give him access 24/7, only during the day or only at night.
The Master Lock Bluetooth Smart Padlock comes in both an indoor version ($50) and an outdoor version ($60), which I would recommend for storage sheds or anywhere that the lock will be exposed to the elements. This technology is ideal for any group where multiple people need access to a lock. The lock also has a directional keypad so it can be opened the “traditional” way just by pushing the right buttons in case you don’t have your phone with you.
