New Belgium recently teamed up with Hof Ten Dormaal of Tildonk, Belgium to create its newest Lips of Faith beer: Golden Ale. Golden Ale (7% ABV) is Brewed with spelt, malted sunflower seeds, and wild carrot herbs, with Saaz and Mosaic hops.
I have tried numerous Belgian ales over the years, and so far I have found few that have grown on me. Belgian yeast has a very particular taste, one that my fussy palate isn’t quite ready to appreciate to the fullest. Nevertheless, I am always up for trying something new.
Golden Ale is bright, lively, and golden in appearance with a slight peppery smell. It is flavorful, medium bodied and slightly hoppy with a crisp, clean finish. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I truly enjoyed everything about it. It definitely has that distinctive Belgian yeast flavor, but it isn’t overwhelming; it’s very balanced.
I am certainly no expert in Belgian beers, but this seems like a classic, true to style example of a Belgian Golden Ale. It would make for a good introductory beer for those unfamiliar with Belgians, and sure to be a favorite of those familiar with them already. I’m pleased to say I have found my “gateway” Belgian beer!
Golden Ale will be released April 4th in 4-packs of 12 oz. bottles, so keep an eye out for it in a liquor store near you.
