Searching for images of Spooky Black on Google paints quite an image: a very young-looking kid sporting a black turtleneck, gold chain and now signature durag, skulking across the backwoods of Minnesota. You might be surprised, then, when you play a Spooky Black song, and your speakers are flooded with a rather stunning, dark sort of magic. Though the productions are somewhat lo-fi, almost like navigating through water, Spooky Black’s voice can stop you in your tracks — a smooth, deep alto that’s just as comfortable pulling a riff as it is intently whispering through a baby-makin’ R&B jam. Spooky Black’s recently released album, Leaving, ends with an excellent track called “DJ Khaled Is My Father”. A delicate warping that sounds similar to crooners James Blake and King Krule, the song plays out just as haunting as it is serene. Heartfelt lyrics float across rippling chains in the background of the music, and at just over 3 minutes, the melancholic lullaby just doesn’t feel long enough.
