NASA Successfully Prints Its First 3D Object in Space

Posted on the 27 November 2014 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

“This first print is the initial step toward providing an on-demand machine shop capability away from Earth,” said Niki Werkheiser, project manager for the International Space Station 3-D Printer at NASA. “The space station is the only laboratory where we can fully test this technology in space.”

The object was actually a small printhead faceplate with the engravings “Made In Space. NASA”. It will probably take some time before they start making significant objects in Space, however this event marks a big milestone towards a future where astronauts will be able to live in Space without having to rely on Earth for spare parts and even food.
