Nākd bars are a very interesting snack; they're made from all natural raw ingredients which are cold pressed rather than baked. They are great for reluctant fruit eaters as each bar provides one of your five a day. I like to eat vegan snacks where I can and these bars are dairy and wheat free, with no added sugar. I've bought their Cocoa Loco, Apple Pie and Banana Bread versions of these bars in the past and enjoyed them, but I was intrigued to try this Rhubarb & Custard version as it seems quite different from the rest of the range.
The bars have quite a soft texture that is not overly sticky or chewy, they are not really a cereal bar but more of a fruit snack. The base ingredients of the Nākd bars range is mostly the same mix of dates, cashews and raisins. It does taste mainly of the dried fruit, but there is a slightly nutty aftertaste too.
I was expecting the rhubarb and custard flavor to be quite subtle, just a slight hint of a taste really. Instead it's a full on flavour, which really does remind me of rhubarb and custard sweets! The rhubarb flavor is unmistakable and there is a strong vanilla undertone. It's a strange flavor combination together with the dried fruits of the bar but it still works as an interesting snack. I think Nākd should add this flavor to their fab range of flavoured raisins, as the combination would work really well.
My favorite of this range is still the Apple Pie bar, but I'm pleased to see new flavours in this range. There is also a new Caffé Mocha bar which I can't wait to try.
