My Top Doo Wop Songs – Part Two

By Billlives

Yesterday, I gave some reflections on Doo Wop in Part One and here are some of my favorites. There are many collections of Doo Wop songs. Here are my choices grouped by CDs that contain them. There is also a lot of overlap in collections. The second and third CD contain some of the the songs listed under the first one but I did not repeat them. If you were born before 1950, I challenge you to not sing these songs in your head as you read them.

Shama Lama Ding Doing – Hear Music

• Only You (and you alone) – The Platters

• For Your Precious Love – Jerry Butler and the Impressions

• In the Still of the Night – The Five Satins

• Tears on my Pillow – Little Anthony and the Imperials (actually “Hurts So Bad" is even better but it is not on this CD) This is also the group I least associate with Doo Wop of those listed but since it was on the Doo WOP CD and I like then, I listed it.

• Stay – Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs

• I Only Have Eyes for You – The Flamingos

• Speedo (but my real name is Mr. Earl) – The Cadillacs

The New Millennium Doo Wop Party – Rhino Records

Book of Love – The Moontones

• Duke of Earl – Gene Chandler - hear the complete song here as Gene Chandler welcomes you to The Dukedom at his site.

• There is a Moon Out Tonight – The Capris

Earth Angel – The Penguins

• Why do Fools Fall in Love – Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers

• Heart and Soul – The Penguins

• Save the Last Dance for Me – The Drifters

The Best of Doo Wop Ballads – Rhino Records

• Where or When – Dion and the Belmonts (named after Belmont Ave. in the Bronx)

Since I Don’t Have You – The Skyliners – “I don't have plans and schemes And I don't have hopes and dreams. I don't have anything. Since I don't have you....”

• Oh What a Night – The Dells

16 Candles – The Crests

Been So Long – The Pastels

Daddy’s Home – Shep and the Limelites

I also have to add “You Belong to Me” covered in Doo Wop style by the Duprees (after Jo Stafford, Patti Page, and others) even though I do not have a copy now. Here are the lyrics written by Pee Wee King, Redd Stewart & Shilton Price in 1952. I challenge you to not sing these. If you need the music here is a site, You Belong to Me, with the music (but bad music) so you can get the tune right. They have the words, too.

See the pyramids along the Nile
And watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
But just remember darling all the while
You belong to me

See the marketplace in old Algiers
Send me photographs and souvenirs
Just remember when a dream appears
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too
And blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
Just remember till you're home again
You belong to me

I'll be so alone without you
Maybe you'll be lonesome too
And blue

Fly the ocean in a silver plane
See the jungle when it's wet with rain
But remember darling till you're home again
That you belong to me
