It’s half term next week, and although I’m not actually going away on holiday, I am going to be sitting around pool at the local lido and pretending that I’m abroad, whilst saving buckets of cash by not traveling during the school holidays! That hasn’t stopped me from thinking about the dream holiday wardrobe that I would like to wear and of course I will still need my staycation holiday essentials such as swimwear, beach bag, towels etc so I’m sure that a little bit of daydreaming and list-making is allowed!
In fact, it’s positively encouraged by M&Co who have set up a challenge to create the ‘ultimate capsule wardrobe’ for summer 2014 for less than £100, and I bet a thrifty blogger like me wouldn’t have any trouble doing that… or so she says, optimistically. I’m definitely going to have a go at the challenge anyway, if only to help you find holiday essentials at bargain prices. So here are my favorite holiday capsule wardrobe pieces and the reasons why I like them:
First up and most importantly is swimwear and I’ve chosen this polka dot tankini. Not only did it remind me of the summer-holiday song ‘itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny-yellow-polka-dot-bikini’, but it looks like an excellent tummy-coverer-upper so I’ll be able to eat as many choc-ices as I like while sitting around the pool! I also like the halterneck and the color is perfect for summer 2014 so I’d pack this swimwear whether I’m heading off on holiday or just to the lido.
As you know, I’m always careful in the sun (read my blog post on high SPF sunscreens here!) so I want to pack this sparkly sun hat/visor to keep my face shaded while I’m on my holiday. This is equally important whether I’m at home or abroad as I want to protect my skin, so this glamorous addition to my holiday wardrobe is essential!
Another important item in my holiday wardrobe is a cover-up such as this violet bow-pocket cardigan. It’ll keep the sun off my shoulders when the midday sun is at its hottest and it will warm me up after the sun has set. The color is in the same tone as Pantone’s color of the year Radiant Orchid and it looks great with the green of the tankini so I could even throw it on if I feel a little chilly after hopping out of the pool.
My essential top is this tropical print wrap - it’s a funky, summery pattern, the colours will coordinate nicely with my choice of cardi and swimwear so could be wrapped over my tankini when I nip to the kiosk for those choc ices! I’d tuck the top into this neutral denim button-front skirt in the evening and add the cardigan if I need an extra layer for warmth later on in the night.
So what do you think of my capsule wardrobe? The whole list comes to £96 so I’ve still got a little left over for a canvas bag, pair of flip-flops or a statement necklace to add to my collection. I can see that I’ll get a lot of use out of this wardrobe over the summer and will enjoy wearing these bright colours and patterns to really get into the holiday spirit, even if I don’t leave my back garden!
