There was a slight lapse in new posts this past month and I wanted to give my readers the reason why. In the weeks leading up to Thanksgiving, my family was given quite a shock. Leaving the specifics out, I will just say my mother had a cancer scare. Thankfully, after some tests and an exploratory surgery it was confirmed that she was cancer free. We did not get these great news until last Wednesday so to say that it took an emotional toll on all of us would be an understatement.
My mother came to this country with a dollar and a dream as the saying goes. Through her own determination she went from being a receptionist to the one of the most successful account executives I know in the apparel industry. There was a glass ceiling for a Jamaican girl with little to no connections, but she blew right past it. She is truly an inspiration to me.
Our relationship is not always perfect, but at the end of the day my mother is my best friend. I cannot fathom what a life without her would be like. When I have I have a good day, she is the first person I call. When I have a bad day, she is the first person I call. When I find a lipstick I like, she is the first person I call. Big or small she is and will always be my first call. She is my confidant and my rock. The thought of her even being sick turns me into a ball of mush.
This year the only thing I really wanted for Christmas was the news that my mother was healthy. Everything else seemed trivial and unnecessary I know this year could have been very different for my mother and my family. I know that next Christmas could have been very different as well. I also know that many families are not so lucky.
My grown up Christmas wish is not peace on earth and goodwill. Those two things would be awesome, but let’s start a little smaller. My wish is for us all to appreciate what we already have and the people around us. You never know when your life may change. That iPad is amazing and those new shoes are nice, but they can never replace family and friends. I am lucky to have a healthy mom who God’s willing has her daughter’s weddings, grandchildren, and *fingers crossed* great-grandchildren in her future, but nothing is ever certain.
This time of year is a wonderful time to give (and let’s be honest, receive), but remember to firstly be appreciative for the important people in your life. I love my mother and the rest of my family from the bottom of my heart and they are all I need for Christmas. I know this blog is all about clothing and beauty products, but at the end of the day they will never fill the void of the irreplaceable people in your life. Always remember that fashionistas!
