My First Instafriday! and Conceptual Art Reflections….

By Reasonstodress

Insta-art

I’m relatively new to Instagram, but I’m starting to understand that it is a pretty interesting way of documenting in real time.

You may not know that I have a degree in Visual Art, specifically majoring in performance and conceptual art.  And from a Conceptual Art perspective, Instagram is a very neat concept!

From the outside looking in, it may seem strange…all of these people posting images of their lunch, or latest buys, or where they are, their kids, parents, neighbours, outfits, bedroom….like who cares?

But really it is amazing.

With Instagram instead of just seeing my own life I can see other people’s lives AS THEY LIVE IT, and they can see mine.  It is an exchange.  A fluid, real exchange modified with filters of course!

Filtered Life

But then again what ISN’T modified with filters now a days?  It is useless to pretend that any image we see hasn’t been modified in some way.

In University I look a very interesting class that was centered around the book Ways of Seeing by a man named John Berger.

Basically, the author takes the reader through a visual journey to help us understand that men and women see differently and that ALL reproductions, the moment they pass through a photographer’s lens or an artists hand have been modified.

Just by capturing and documenting, we apply our own aesthetic, judgments and subversions to whatever it is we are trying to document.  This did not begin with Photoshop and digital modification, it has been around for thousands of years from the very first “representations”.  Think of all paintings  funded by the wealthy during the Renaissance.  The artist had a responsibility to present their patron in the best light possible, so they modified them according to what was in-style.  Maybe they made them fatter to show wealth, or made their hair curlier, their jewels larger, or them taller, all of these acts were modifications.

So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that Instagram just makes this obvious, and I appreciate this from an artistic perspective!

InstaJourney

So here goes.  I’m fully diving into Instagram!  And to celebrate each week on Friday, Saturday or Sunday, I will try to link-up with InstaFriday at Life Rearranged, whose author Jeannett has an inspiring story for any mom and who creates a space for all people to share their own.

InstaFriday is a place where bloggers post instagram picutres, and “ink-up” with one another to see how others have passed the last 7 days. For my very first instagram I will be showing you more than only 7 days…just because it’s the first!

I would love to have you as an instagram follower, you can find me here.
