mulholland drive
This is one movie which I had to watch atleast 3 times to make any heads or tails out of it. And I was ready to go through this orgy because this is one of the most brilliant films that I have ever seen.
Mulholland Dr. narrates the tale of a perky Hollywood-hopeful who, after a car wreck on the winding Mulholland Drive is rendered amnesic. Now she is searching for clues and answers across Los Angeles in a twisting venture beyond dreams and reality.
Directed by David Lynch, this movie features in my list of top 30 mindfuck movies. Giving the film only the tagline, "A love story in the city of dreams", David Lynch had refused to comment on Mulholland Drive's meaning or symbolism, leading to much discussion and multiple interpretations. Contained within the original DVD release was a card titled "David Lynch's 10 Clues to Unlocking This Thriller". The clues are:
1. Pay particular attention in the beginning of the film: At least two clues are revealed before the credits.
2. Notice appearances of the red lampshade.
3. Can you hear the title of the film that Adam Kesher is auditioning actresses for? Is it mentioned again?
4. An accident is a terrible event — notice the location of the accident.
5. Who gives a key, and why?
6. Notice the robe, the ashtray, the coffee cup.
7. What is felt, realized and gathered at the Club Silencio?
8. Did talent alone help Camilla?
9. Note the occurrences surrounding the man behind Winkie's.
10. Where is Aunt Ruth?
But let me assure you that even with these clues, which are really hard to notice in the first viewing, you would only come up with one possible interpretation of this movie. There are several other plausible interpretations out there.
If you ask me, I would say the whole movie was a dream sequence of Betty Elms.
Mulholland Drive earned David Lynch the Best Director's award at the Cannes Film Festival along with several other awards.
Now if you would be so interested in deciphering the meaning of Mulholland Drive, you might refer to this website called Lost on Mulholland Drive which is a fan community dedicated in investigating the mysteries around this David Lynch masterpiece. Just a suggestion, don't miss the opening credits else you would never be able to know what happening.
