For one, this movie starts off with one of my favorite songs (and many other great songs from the 70s)and then proceeds to the movie' s first line about the lead having sex.And that's what this film is about: sex. It's not just about having sex, but about having sex for the first time, it's about wanting sex, craving it and being a bit confused about that and the hell sex is supposed to mean. It's about sexual freedom and it's honest and while some people think it's a bit cringe worthy, I don't because it's just sex and her thoughts about it are realistic.She says in the movie, "I think this officially makes me an adult. I think?" Andreally this is what most young girls think. Am I an adult now? I just did this adult thing and ultimately, there's not an answer to that because it's up to the person.Minnie's adventures in growing up mirror mine immensely and while I'm not out here fucking my mother's boyfriend, I get her craving her need for someone's attention and sex in general. Not only are her inner monologues about wanting to be fucked something that every young girl thinks about it, but seeing her standing in front of the mirror just wanting someone to completely and wholly love her regardless of how she looked (because she hates the way she looks, like every teenage girl out there) that was me and a lot of other girls' thinking because we're told not to want sex and enjoy sex or be labeled a whore and the lead, Bel Powley is a star giving us all this information as Minnie.While Kristen Wiig and Alexandrr Skarsgard are good in their roles as her eccentric, somewhat inappropriate, drug addicted mother and her mother's semi-creepy yet sweet boyfriend, Bel Powley is fucking great. Even Christopher Meloni's pretty good here and I haven't seen him since White Bird in a Blizzard, which he was good in as well. But Bel shines as this teenage girl on the prime of her sexual awakening and that along with the super cool drawing scenes scattered throughout the film and the vibrant, cool vibe of the 70s, Diary of a Teenage Girl is a must see!
