Movie Review – Snitch (2013)

By Manofyesterday

Director: Ric Roman Waugh

Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Jon Bernthal, Barry Pepper, Susan Sarandon, Michael K. Williams, Rafi Gavron, Benjamin Bratt, Melina Kanakaredes, Nadine Velazquez

A father (Johnson) is forced to go undercover to bust a drug cartel in order to get his son out of prison.

Blah blah. This movie didn’t work for me at all. I usually like The Rock no matter what he’s in but there was just something lacking about this performance. I didn’t get a sense of the drama or levity of the situation, even though the film clearly wanted me to feel it. I don’t know if it was a problem with the writing or the direction but Snitch is one of those films where I just don’t give a big deal about the characters. The car chases are okay, and Bernthal gives a good performance, but other than that there’s nothing that really sets this apart from a hundred other action films.

It feels very by the numbers so I can’t recommend at all, even if like me you’re a big fan of Dwayne Johnson. It’s painfully average, and doesn’t excel in any area so it’s hard to say it’s a bad film, but it just doesn’t do anything special so for me it’s one to avoid.
