Summary: When a young boy and his mother who have been held captive for years finally escape, they both must navigate the ways of the outside world, especially when they young boy has believed his whole life that the Room he's been in is the entire world.
My Thoughts: I remember when the book this movie is based on blew up the entire blog-o-sphere. It was something else and it was all anyone could talk about and while, I've never read the book, I enjoyed the hell out of the movie. "See it and be transformed," it says on the movie poster and was I transformed? In some ways, yes. The story itself is gripping, it makes you feel so many feelings that you kind of can't comprehend because you hear about this happening on the news and whatnot, but actually seeing what happens to the people that go through this is another story. Especially when the actors are believable and realistic and wheRn the main character is a little boy. He doesn't know much and you want him to understand what's going on and unfortunately, this is movie, you can't just scream at the characters no matter how badly you want to and that's the magic of this movie. This movie isn't exactly going to make you happy and it's not going to make you sad. Sure, you'll walk out of the theater feeling fufilled after seeing it, but you'll walk out feeling a bit numb because of the story it's telling. These bad things are happening to these people and Brie Larson just takes it all in as Ma, trying to keep it together for Jacob Tremblay who shines as her son. Their relationship is genuine and just as a mother and son relationship is: hard, especially while all these things are happening and at some points they frustrate you. They choices make you angry, but you have to realize that people experience pain and trauma in different ways and all you can do is sit and think about the situation they were put in and just how you would respond if you were put in the same place because the world sucks, let me put it like that. It's dirty, mean and disgusting and that's what Ma was trying to hide from her child because she was the one who'd been kidnapped and that's how she saw the world, but that's not life because it's not all dark and every once in a while there's a little bit of light, or something grand that makes it worthwhile and for Ma, that was her son who say the world as this whimsical happy place. And seeing the differences in how she believed the world and how her son saw it was the reason why this movie was so great for me because it showed the world in two ways: the bleak, dark reality filled with all it's harshness and the magical world how we'd like it to be and they intermingle to make the reality we know and live in.
Room is great. It's great visually and tells a hell of a good story and after watching it, you're going to need to sit down and think about what you saw, like I had, and take it all in. It's going to make you feel things that make you uncomfortable, but it also tells you that that's what life it, and that it's okay.
